• There are more than 300 unaccredited universities now operating. While a few are genuine start-ups or online ventures, the great majority range from merely dreadful to out-and-out diploma mills-fake schools that will sell people any degree they want at prices from $3,000 to $5,000.

• It is not uncommon for a large fake school to "award" as many as 500 Ph.D.'s every month.

• The aggregate income of the bad guys is easily in excess of $200 million a year. Data show that a single phony school can earn between $10 million and $20 million annually. (sogo and click their ads, cost them some money)

• With the closure of the FBI's diploma mill task force, the indifference of most state law enforcement agencies, the minimal interest of the news media, and the growing ease of using the Internet to start and run a fake university, things are rapidly growing worse.

These diploma mills survive by operating in states with lax law governing schools, such as California, Utah, Hawaii and Louisiana. They assume identities of well-known schools or as "religious" organizations. Because of constitutional safeguards in the United States guarantee separation of church and state, most states have been reluctant to pass any laws restricting the activities of churches, including their right to grant degrees

To further protect themselves and to take advantage of less rigorous laws, diploma mills often operate out of multiple political jurisdictions. Or they sell their products only in other states or other countries. Many degree mills operate from England selling their product only to people in other countries, primarily the United States, Africa, and Asia

• See if the online school is accredited and by whom. Check to see if the accrediting agency is officially sanctioned. http://www.chea.org/Directories/index.asp

• Check with licensing boards and professional associations to see if the program delivers an acceptable level of training. http://www.clearhq.org/boards.htm http://www.op.nysed.gov/national.htm

• Call or write the Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org/ and the attorney general's office http://www.findthelinks.com/Legal%20help/index.htm to make sure the school is operating legally in a state and to see if anyone has filed a complaint.

• Find out if the school is connected to an established, reputable parent company.

• If you intend to transfer any online credits earned to another college or university, early on check with that institution to see if they accept those credits.

• Refer to the published guides of online, correspondence and other distance delivered courses
