Stellenbosch (founded in 1679) is about 50km east of Cape Town and is the second oldest town in South Africa. It was named (like Simonstown) after the Governer Simon van der Stel. The city is situated at the banks of the Eerste River ('First River). It's home to one of the countries most established universities with over 15.000 students and offers some fine examples of Cape-Dutch architecture. Wines from Stellenbosch are known everywhere in the world and rank among the best.
